In Mariga town in Mariga Local Government Council, Niger State, a flood has carried more than 500 dead out of their graves in a cemetery.
A local named Mohammed Aliyu claims that the River Mariga spilled its banks and into the cemetery, which caused the bodies to be washed out of their graves.
He said that some of the remains are still missing and that on Wednesday morning, when the residents woke up, they saw corpses floating in the river.
He said that the state administration had been contacted by the district head and asked for prompt action, and they had replied quickly.
"The authorities responded quickly, and as of this afternoon (Tuesday), around 200 dead had been found. They are still having trouble entering the region, he continued.
When reached, Ahmed Inga, the director general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, verified the incident but said he couldn't determine how many bodies the river had swept downstream.
"It is true that the River Mariga breached its banks and swept away some of the nearby burial,"
It is true that dead corpses were swept away when I went there with the commissioner of works, but I am unable to tell you how many bodies there were since the recovery effort is still underway, Inga said.
